The monkey fist is a knot which served to weigh the end of a rope, to secure it when climbing or as an ornamental knot. And a Monkey Fist can be use as self defence tool.
Previously the monkey fist was often used in the shipping industry. In commercial shipping, this node is known as a boom node. Sometimes it is also called the child head or the head of an affair. In the German navy the use of the monkey fist is forbidden, because of the strength again and again accidents. In US ports, this node was often cut by the fence maker to determine whether it was not forbidden to contain metal. Today it is only used as ornamental knot.
The monkey fist serves as a throwing knot for throwing lines. Leather bags filled with sand are more common.
When climbing, the monkey fist is used as a safety clamp in Saxon Switzerland, since the use of metallic clamping wedges is not permitted.
In the Poi swing, monkey fists are used as round burners for fire acrobatics.
It is also used as a “button” on garments, as a closure for shirt cuffs (two monkey fists), or together with a spliced eye as a belt.
